Lago d’Arpy day hike

It was one of those travel days that will stay with you for years to come, if not forever in your heart. One of those days that was totally unexpected, but due to the kindness of a friend, something unique and different was experienced.

I came to Milan for a few days with the intent of visiting a fellow travel friend, Marco, and to go on to Como to visit another friend too. As far as I knew, we would be hanging around Milan, taking in the sites, drinking coffee, and spending my time in the city (apart from my day trip to Como). When Marco took a day off work and said he was taking me somewhere special, I was up for it. Would be nice to get out of the city.

Little did I know what I would be seeing….. Marco drove us to the Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta) at the base of the Alps, to go on a small day hike on the Arpy trail to the Arpy Lake – a glorious lake surrounded by mountains. And on the most glorious perfect Spring day you could of asked for as well!

On our way to the start of the hiking trail we stopped at a small mountain town, and stocked up on the most glorious cold cut meats, fresh bread and some of the local liqueur known as “genepi” (a potent drink similar to absinthe made from a local plant). With our lunch organised, we were off.

The hike was easy, and as we walked the path higher I finally got to see snow for the first time in my life! Even though it was only a patch, I was excited, and even more excited when we got to our destination and saw there was lots more of it! We sat by the lake and enjoyed our lunch, Marco showed me how to slide on the snow using our jackets, and we just sat in the warm sun and soaked it all in. Marco showed me some of the peaks, including Mont Blanc, which he climbed when he was still in his teens!

On our way back to Milan we went by way of Courmayeur, a charming town just inside the Italian border from France, which during winter is a ski resort. It was beautiful walking he cobbled streets, peaking into little lanes, enjoying the quiet. Apparently in winter it is very busy, which I couldn’t picture on this gorgeous quiet spring day.

There are many days in my travelling life that rank highly in my memory. My day in the Aosta Valley is one of them. Glorious sunshine, fresh mountain air, a chance to slide on the snow for the first time, freshly baked bread filled with salamis and hams, seeing Mont Blanc, hiking a trail. Something totally unexpected. Glad to have done it!

Thanks to “monsy” for the memories!!!

Ah, the Alps. Lived there 80% of my life and I still think they’re a hell of a place. Glad you liked it!
